چکیده
Abstract Vaccination is one mechanism used as a preventative measure to decrease morbidity and mortality due bovine respiratory disease (BRD), but vaccination efficacy inconsistent. Therefore, the objective of this study was compare effect inactivated (INA) vs. modified live (MLV) viral vaccines on immune phenotype weaned beef calves. Mixed-sexed pens with equal numbers heifers steers were randomly assigned receive either INA (Vira Shield 6) or MLV (Titanium 5) treatments at d 0 (initial) booster (28 d). A subpopulation (n = 28) 18) identified from these treatment balanced for treatment. Samples obtained prior 14 28 post-initial again post-booster. All animals weighed collection days. Data analyzed using GLM MIXED procedures SAS repeated measures. × day interaction occurred cortisol vaccination; calves had greater (P 0.05) than At post-booster, < total IgG isotypes IgG1 IgG2. cytokine concentrations associated humoral cell-mediated responses. Effect of a trainer cow on health, behavior, and performance of newly weaned beef calves.
Experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of the presence of a trainer cow on behavior, performance, health, and feeding patterns of newly weaned beef calves. In Exp. 1,252 weaned calves (270+/-18 kg) were allocated to 22 pens (11 to 15 calves per pen). A trainer cow was randomly assigned to each of 11 pens. Calves were weighed prior to feeding on d 0, 3, 7, 14, 21, and 28. Rectal t...
متن کاملEffect of Feeding Selenium-Fertilized Alfalfa Hay on Performance of Weaned Beef Calves
Selenium (Se) is an essential micronutrient in cattle, and Se-deficiency can affect morbidity and mortality. Calves may have greater Se requirements during periods of stress, such as during the transitional period between weaning and movement to a feedlot. Previously, we showed that feeding Se-fertilized forage increases whole-blood (WB) Se concentrations in mature beef cows. Our current object...
متن کاملEscherichia coli O157:H7 in a cohort of weaned, preconditioned range beef calves.
Escherichia coli O157:H7 (EC O157) is an important cause of foodborne disease. Cattle are reservoirs for the bacteria and are implicated in transmission to humans. Prevalence data in prefeedlot calves are limited. With the use of sensitive methods, a cohort of weaned beef calves (n = 408) was sampled before and after preconditioning to estimate fecal point prevalence and describe changes in EC ...

These results support the earlier findings by Dr. Bill Kunkle and his research involving limitcreep supplements based on cottonseed meal and salt mixtures. Calf performance responses, as measured by the added gain realized by creep supplementation, are highly variable and cannot always be described by amounts of creep feed consumed. This variability has large and direct impacts on the cost effe...
متن کاملEarly weaning beef calves.
Early weaning is a management practice that reduces grazing pressure on pastures by decreasing the nutrient requirements of cows. Calves that are weaned early are relatively efficient at converting feed to gain, and can weigh as much, or more than, calves allowed to remain with their dams until a conventional weaning age is reached. Balanced diets with excellent physical, chemical, and palatabi...
